This week marked the beginning of Lent, everyone received ashes as a cross on their forehead from our Faithful Friends.
After the Ash Wednesday liturgy in school, Deacon Martyn came to into our class to explain the different parts to the Mass. We learnt all about the Liturgy of the Word and what it means and the Liturgy of the Eucharist and why the bread and wine is so important. We were surprised that the most important part of Mass is the end where the priest tells us to go and spread the gospel.
We are trying to do this, especially during Lent as class 2 are going to spread the word by helping the people at the drop-in café in the parish hall.
Finally Deacon Martyn blessed our new cross that we painted ourselves and use during our class liturgy every week.
Can you remember where the ashes come from?

What a beautiful Mass we celebrated to mark the beginning of the New Year. All of our Reception class children received a Bible from Bishop Patrick, to mark ‘The year of the Word’.
It was lovely to see so many children, parents and carers from Our Lady’s Academy today. It was important to celebrate the start of our Advent journey as we prepare for the birth of Jesus. The first purple candle in our Advent wreath was lit on the altar. This year is also the Year of the Word where we will learn more about the Bible finding out about its important stories and messages and how we live our lives.
Well done to all the children who had an important part to play in our celebration today and all the adults who joined us in our Advent journey.
How will you prepare for the Birth of Jesus?
We did it! We raised £230 in total to buy a laptop and books for the school we have been learning about in Tanzania. Thank you parents and children for your kindness and generosity – have you ever seen so many cakes in one place!?
I’m sure the children at Tamani School will really appreciate our donation. Check back for pictures of the school receiving it.
It was lovely to see everyone at Church as our School and Parish Community joined together to celebrate and give thanks for all of God’s good gifts. The children had responsibility for the readings, prayers and liturgical dance at the Mass , as well as the important offertory of gifts that was led by the Kenyan community today.
The gifts will now be shared within the Community to those who are in need.

As our Easter project we created 20 backpacks to donate to homeless people. We wrote letters to supermarkets to ask for donations, shopped for things ourselves and asked our family and friends for kind donations. We have also been praying for homeless people and empathising with how it may feel to not have a home. Our blue rucksacks contained many useful items such as: deodorant, wipes, hand sanitizer, socks, a torch, toothbrush and paste, chocolate and biscuits…just to name a few things!
Our project concluded when we had a visit from Denis, the CEO of Emmanuel House, and Lauren. They told us more about homelessness in an assembly and the incredible work they do to support homeless people in Nottingham. We then gave them the 20 rucksacks, and two sleeping bags, so that they can share them with those in need.
Thank you to Emmanuel House for your visit, TESCO for their gift card that we spent on useful items, and for the generous families in our school who made kind donations to our project.
We are Easter people!
