Yesterday the children spent some time in the garden. After naming and recognising the things that were growing ,we watered the plants.  The potatoes and cabbage have grown really well. Everyone also made a self watering planter and sowed seeds that will grow into yummy carrots in a couple of weeks.

It is 5 weeks since potatoes, onions, garlic, broad beans and seeds were planted into the school garden and I am pleased to say that the garden is looking great. The chitted potatoes from every class can be seen and everything else has healthy shoots. Mr Williams has a very busy garden, well done. The cabbages that were sown in year 1 were planted out today. We also made some bee pots for solitary bees,as we try to look after our pollinators. We also tied the broad beans to a cane to stop them falling over. The tomatoes from year 4 and sweetcorn from year 2 will be planted when it gets warmer.

Do you have any growing news to share about your garden? I’d love to hear, Mrs Fedyszyn

I’m missing all the making we do in class , so its great to see you enjoying the sunshine and making in your gardens. Lawrence has been busy making a bug home which looks great, thank you for the photos. Here are some other ideas to help our wildlife, which you can ask an adult to help you with. Don’t forget to email your photos. Keep up the hard work, Mrs Fedyszyn

Planting sunflowers

Hello everyone,

I have also planted my sunflower seeds today in a pot full of compost.

To save watering you can make a mini greenhouse from a pop bottle, keep the lid. Your seeds will also be warmer so should germinate quicker.

Someone has made this for their pepper plants, but it would  work for sunflowers . Ask a grown up to cut the bottle in half.

Have a look at this  step by step   https://www.instructables.com/id/Pop-Bottle-Greenhouse/

Have fun, be safe

Finally the weather was dry enough to work outside. Some children were busy potting up the pansies for Mothers Day. Whilst others were raking the moss out of the wildflower area. It was also a hard job moving the soil into another growing area and emptying some of the compost bins. Everyone had new aprons and gloves to wear as we enjoyed using some of our new tools.  We also had our first winner of the weekly golden trowel, well done.

It was lovely to see so many enthusiastic gardeners this week. We have been busy unpacking some new equipment and finding out how to use them safely. The children were also busy decorating the pots for our Mothers Day sale, profit will be shared between Garden Club and CAFOD. It was very wet but we were able to plant some garlic and sow marigold seeds. We now have a golden trowel which will be awarded to a super gardener each week. Lets hope next week is sunny!!

During January we had a lot of activity in our school garden with visitors from Edible Gardens and the Wildlife trust. We are so excited that we now have raised beds that the children will be using to grow, harvest and cook their own produce. Hopefully we will enjoy the garden when the weather gets warmer and drier- we can’t wait to get everyone growing in school.

What do you think we can grow in our garden?

Autumn in the garden

We have had lots of things growing this year and now its time to tidy up.  It was lovely to see so many minibeasts around the garden as well. The weather has been very unpredictable so some weeks we have been indoors. Everyone has enjoyed the sweeping and raking of leaves, along with digging in the garden. The best bit was making the apple crumbles to take home for tea.

Garden Club visited the Community Garden at the Forest Recreation ground today. We met Matt one of the Park Rangers who quizzed us when identifying the plants and herbs in their garden. Well done everyone for recognising so many of the plants. Everyone then helped clear an overgrown garden so there was a lot of weeding and digging to do. Finally it was a team effort to create a shelter that we could all fit into. I was impressed with the team effort and enthusiasm from you all, well done!
